Submission Guidelines
1. Scope of the Journal
AI & Future Society publishes interdisciplinary research and critical perspectives on the societal transformations driven by artificial intelligence. We welcome contributions to the following sections:
- AI & Ethics
- AI Governance & Regulation
- Human-AI Interaction
- Technology & Future Society
- Critical AI Studies
- Special Issues
- Perspectives & Commentary
- AI in Medicine & Health
2. Manuscript Types
- Research Articles: 4000-8000 words (Original theoretical or empirical work)
- Review Articles: 5000-9000 words (Comprehensive literature syntheses)
- Critical Essays and Commentaries: 2000-4000 words (Conceptual or speculative analyses)
- Short Communications: 1500-3000 words (Exploratory or preliminary research)
- Invited Contributions: For Special Issues and Editorial Commentaries
Choosing a section. The six subject sections accept research, reviews, and conceptual or theoretical work appropriate to their scope. State the manuscript type in the cover letter as well as selecting the section in OJS. Perspectives & Commentary accepts focused, evidence-informed perspectives, scholarly commentaries, and debate contributions, including both unsolicited and invited submissions. An invitation does not imply acceptance.
Special Issues. Submit to Special Issues only for an announced special issue or themed collection. Identify the collection in the cover letter and follow its call for papers alongside these guidelines. Both open-call and invited manuscripts may be considered. Guest editors coordinate the collection under journal-editor oversight. An independent editor handles conflicts of interest, and journal editors retain responsibility for publication decisions.
3. Submission Requirements
Manuscripts must include the following mandatory elements:
- Title, abstract of no more than 300 words (150 words for Perspectives & Commentary), and 5-7 keywords
- Structured main text with headings
- References in APA 7th style
- Author affiliations and ORCID IDs
- Acknowledgments and funding statements
- Ethics declarations (if applicable)
- Data availability statement for empirical studies
Abstract requirements. All eight sections require an abstract. The maximum is 300 words for the six subject sections and Special Issues, and 150 words for Perspectives & Commentary. Summarise the purpose, approach, principal findings or argument, and contribution. The abstract entered in OJS must match the manuscript.
4. Ethical Standards
Authors are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity:
- Disclose all conflicts of interest
- Obtain IRB or ethics committee approval where required
- Ensure data privacy, consent, and appropriate use
- Provide open data/code licensing where relevant
4.1 AI Usage Disclosure
Responsible and transparent use of AI tools must be declared. Authors must complete the AI Usage Disclosure Form if any AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, Copilot) were used during writing, analysis, or visualization.
5. Peer Review Policy
Submissions in all eight sections, including Perspectives & Commentary and Special Issues, receive editorial assessment for relevance, originality, scholarly quality, and compliance with these guidelines. Manuscripts selected for external assessment undergo double-anonymous peer review. Invitations and inclusion in a collection do not bypass assessment. Authors must anonymise the review manuscript and provide author details on a separate title page. Editorial outcomes include:
- Forward to peer review
- Request major revision prior to review
- Reject at editorial screening stage
When revising, provide a clean revised manuscript and a point-by-point response explaining how each editorial and reviewer comment has been addressed, with page or section locations. Supply a version showing changes when requested. Explain any recommendation not adopted. The handling editor determines whether further external review is needed and makes the decision on revision or acceptance.
6. Formatting and Style
Manuscripts must be submitted in DOCX format. Use inclusive, non-discriminatory language. Embed all figures and tables with appropriate captions. Use footnotes sparingly.
7. Submission Process
Submit via our OJS platform. Registration is required for first-time users. All submissions must be original and not under review elsewhere.
8. Licensing and Copyright
Authors retain copyright under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license. By submitting a manuscript to the journal, authors agree to these terms automatically. No separate publication agreement is required upon acceptance.
