1. Copyright Ownership

Authors retain copyright of their published articles. The journal does not require authors to transfer copyright to the journal, the Editorial Office, or the publisher.

By submitting and publishing with Journal of Dance and Embodied Structure, authors grant the journal the right to publish the article, identify itself as the original publisher, distribute the article online, preserve the article, and include the article in indexing, abstracting, archiving, and metadata services where applicable.

2. License for Published Articles

Unless otherwise stated, all articles published in the journal are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

4. Author Rights

Authors may:

• Share the published article on personal websites, institutional profiles, academic networks, and scholarly platforms;
• Deposit the published version in institutional repositories, disciplinary repositories, funder repositories, or other lawful repositories;
• Use the article in teaching, lectures, workshops, conference presentations, and academic events;
• Reuse parts of the article in future books, edited volumes, teaching materials, reports, or other scholarly works, with proper citation to the original publication;
• Distribute the article to students, colleagues, collaborators, and research communities;
• Translate or adapt the article, provided that the original publication is properly acknowledged.

5. Journal Rights

By publishing with the journal, authors grant Journal of Dance and Embodied Structure the non-exclusive right to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, preserve, and identify the article as part of the journal’s scholarly record.

The journal may also use article metadata, abstracts, keywords, references, licensing information, and article files for indexing, archiving, preservation, discoverability, and scholarly communication purposes.

6. Reader and User Rights

Readers and users may access, read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to, reuse, translate, adapt, and build upon published articles without requesting prior permission from the journal or publisher, provided that the original author(s), article, journal, and license are properly credited.

7. Third-Party Materials

Articles in dance, performance, movement, and embodied research may include third-party materials such as photographs, video stills, performance documentation, choreography records, diagrams, notation examples, archival images, artworks, screenshots, maps, scores, or other copyrighted content.

Third-party materials included in an article may not automatically be covered by the article’s CC BY 4.0 license. The license status of such materials should be clearly indicated in captions, credit lines, permissions statements, or source notes.

Readers who wish to reuse third-party materials should check the relevant rights information and obtain permission from the copyright holder where required.

8. Author Responsibility for Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce, adapt, or publish any copyrighted or restricted materials that are not their own.

This responsibility applies to, but is not limited to:

• Performance photographs;
• Rehearsal images;
• Video stills;
• Stage designs and production materials;
• Choreographic documentation;
• Movement notation and diagrams;
• Archival documents and images;
• Artwork, illustrations, and screenshots;
• Musical scores, scripts, and textual excerpts;
• Materials from private collections, companies, artists, institutions, or communities.

Authors must provide proper credit for all third-party materials and, where required, evidence of permission before publication.

9. Images of People and Performance Documentation

When submitting images, videos, or documentation that include identifiable individuals, performers, students, participants, community members, or audience members, authors must ensure that appropriate consent has been obtained where required.

Special care should be taken when materials involve minors, vulnerable individuals, private rehearsals, classrooms, workshops, community practices, ritual performances, or culturally sensitive contexts.

The journal may request confirmation of consent, permission, or ethical approval before publication.

10. Cultural and Community Rights

Research involving traditional dance, ritual movement, Indigenous knowledge, local community practices, religious performance, community archives, or culturally restricted materials must respect relevant cultural, ethical, and community expectations.

Authors should avoid unauthorized disclosure, misrepresentation, appropriation, or misuse of culturally sensitive materials. Where applicable, authors should obtain permission from relevant communities, artists, cultural custodians, archives, or institutions.

11. Preprints and Prior Dissemination

The journal allows authors to share preprints or earlier versions of their work where this is consistent with academic standards and does not violate agreements with other parties.

Authors should disclose any preprint, working paper, conference paper, project report, or prior public dissemination of the manuscript at the time of submission.

After publication, authors are encouraged to update preprint records or related online versions with a citation and link to the final published article.

12. Repository Deposit

Authors may deposit the published version of their article in repositories, including institutional repositories, disciplinary repositories, funder repositories, personal websites, academic profiles, and lawful scholarly sharing platforms.

Repository records should include a full citation to the published article and a link to the official version on the journal website where possible.

13. Use in Teaching and Research

Articles published in the journal may be used in teaching, course packs, reading lists, seminars, workshops, academic presentations, research projects, and public educational activities, provided that proper attribution is given.

Users should cite the original article and include license information where appropriate.

14. Translations and Adaptations

Users may translate, adapt, or build upon articles published under CC BY 4.0, provided that the original work is properly credited and any changes are clearly indicated.

Translations or adaptations must not imply that the original author(s), journal, Editorial Office, or publisher endorses the translated or adapted version unless explicit permission has been obtained.

15. Commercial Reuse

CC BY 4.0 permits commercial reuse of published articles, provided that proper attribution is given and the terms of the license are followed.

If authors, readers, artists, performers, photographers, archives, institutions, communities, or rights holders believe that published content infringes copyright, privacy rights, moral rights, cultural rights, or other legal or ethical rights, they may contact the Editorial Office with relevant information.

The Editorial Office will review copyright and licensing concerns and may request clarification, correction, permission documentation, removal of material, publication of a notice, or other appropriate action.

Published articles should include a clear copyright and license statement. A standard statement may be used as follows:

19. Exceptions to the Standard License

In exceptional circumstances, a specific article, figure, image, performance document, or supplementary material may carry a different rights statement if required by copyright, archival restrictions, third-party permissions, cultural protocols, or legal obligations.

Any exception should be clearly indicated in the article, caption, credit line, or supplementary material description.
