Updated Submission Guidelines and Editorial Policies — Effective 1 November 2026
Posted on 2026-10-28 13:32:44Effective Date: 1 November 2026
The Editorial Office of Resonance: Journal of Global Music Studies announces a coordinated revision of the journal's submission guidelines, editorial policies, and section-specific publication requirements. These updates are intended to improve clarity, consistency, scholarly integrity, and transparency across the journal's research, creative, documentary, and critical contributions.
The revised provisions will take effect on 1 November 2026 and will apply to new submissions received on or after that date.
Overview of the UpdatesThe revisions address the following areas:
- Submission Guidelines and Manuscript Preparation: Clarified requirements concerning manuscript categories, accepted languages, abstracts, keywords, citation styles, author information, supporting documentation, and submission completeness.
- Section-Specific Editorial Standards: More detailed descriptions of each section's intellectual scope, eligible contributions, manuscript preparation requirements, and evaluation criteria.
- Peer Review and Editorial Assessment: Clearer distinctions between original research articles subject to double-blind peer review and creative, reflective, documentary, or other non-research contributions assessed through appropriate editorial procedures.
- Publication Ethics and Research Integrity: Expanded guidance on originality, accurate attribution, research transparency, conflicts of interest, human participants, cultural responsibilities, and the handling of sensitive materials.
- Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies: Clarified expectations for responsible AI-assisted research, writing, translation, transcription, analysis, musical creativity, and audiovisual processing, including appropriate disclosure and human accountability.
- Music, Media and Third-Party Rights: Strengthened guidance concerning musical scores, performances, recordings, interviews, photographs, archival sources, multimedia materials, publication permissions, and open-access licensing.
- Editorial Transparency and Publication Records: Improved guidance on review classification, editorial decisions, corrections, retractions, archival responsibilities, and the accurate presentation of published contributions.
Resonance continues to maintain its established double-blind peer-review policy for original research articles. Research manuscripts that proceed beyond initial editorial screening are evaluated by at least two independent qualified reviewers.
Creative works, artistic reflections, interviews, critical reviews, documentary contributions, and other non-research materials are normally evaluated through appropriate editorial assessment. Additional specialist evaluation may be requested where necessary.
Contributions presenting substantive original research claims remain subject to the journal's research peer-review requirements, regardless of their section placement or presentation format.
These revisions clarify existing standards and strengthen the consistency of editorial classification. They do not imply that all publication types follow identical review procedures.
Updated Journal SectionsThe updated guidance covers the journal's established scholarly and creative publication sections, including Research Articles, Timeless Resonance: East–West Music Review, Sound Archives: Fieldwork and Memory, Voices Now: Contemporary Soundscapes, The Score Page, Dialogues & Interviews, Performance Notes, and other specialized sections.
Contributors are encouraged to review the description of their intended section carefully before submitting. Requirements may differ according to the manuscript's disciplinary approach, scholarly purpose, contribution type, and accompanying materials.
Application and Transitional ArrangementsNew Submissions: Manuscripts received on or after 1 November 2026 should comply with the revised policies and the applicable requirements of the selected publication section.
Manuscripts Already Under Consideration: For submissions received before the effective date, the Editorial Office will communicate individually with authors if any clarification, documentation, or procedural adjustment is required.
Publication Charges: This announcement does not itself introduce a change to the journal's article processing charges, existing promotional arrangements, or applicable waiver policies. Authors should consult the relevant published fee policy for current terms.
The revised provisions should be read together with the journal's existing commitments to editorial independence, fair assessment, responsible open-access publication, and the integrity of the scholarly record.
