Submission Process|
Contemporary Review of Political Thought (CRoPT) uses its designated online submission system to manage manuscript submission, initial editorial assessment, peer review where applicable, revision, production, and publication. Authors should submit their work through the journal's official submission system and follow the requirements applicable to their manuscript category.
Manuscripts sent directly by email are not normally treated as formal submissions unless the editorial office specifically provides alternative instructions. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submitted files, author information, manuscript metadata, and applicable ethical and publication declarations are complete and accurate.
Step 1: Before Submission /
Before beginning a submission, authors should review the journal's aims and scope, author guidelines, article types, manuscript preparation instructions, publication ethics requirements, and copyright and licensing policy. The manuscript should make a substantive scholarly contribution to an area covered by CRoPT.
Preparation Checklist /
- Confirm the manuscript's relevance to the journal's scope.
- Select an appropriate manuscript category and prepare the work accordingly.
- Confirm originality and the absence of simultaneous submission.
- Prepare the manuscript and applicable ethical and publication declarations.
- Verify references, quotations, figures, tables, and supplementary files.
Authors should disclose relevant prior dissemination and overlapping work where required by the journal's publication ethics policy. A previous preprint, presentation, or related publication should not be concealed when it is relevant to originality or publication status.
Step 2: Account Registration or Login /
Authors should access the journal's official submission system and register an account or sign in using an existing account. The corresponding author, or another author authorized by all coauthors, should normally complete the submission and serve as the principal contact for editorial communication.
Account and contact information should be accurate and kept up to date. Authors should verify their email addresses, institutional affiliations, and relevant account permissions before starting a new submission.
Step 3: Start a New Submission /
After signing in, authors should begin a new submission and choose the journal section that most closely corresponds to the manuscript's subject. Authors should also identify the appropriate manuscript category in the submission information or accompanying communication, as applicable to the available submission fields.
Journal Sections and Manuscript Categories: A section identifies the scholarly subject area, such as Political Philosophy, Intellectual History, Forum, or Book Reviews. A manuscript category identifies the form of the contribution, such as Original Research Articles, Theoretical Essays, Review Articles, Review Essays, Policy and Institutional Analysis, Forum Contributions, or Book Reviews. These classifications should not be confused.
The editorial office may request clarification or reclassify a manuscript where its selected section or article category does not accurately reflect its content. Special Issue submissions should also identify the relevant themed collection where applicable.
Step 4: Upload Manuscript Files /
Authors should upload the principal manuscript file and any supporting documents required for their submission. The main manuscript should normally be supplied in an editable format, preferably Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), in accordance with the journal's Manuscript Preparation instructions.
Submission Files /
- Main Manuscript
- Separate Title Page, Where Required
- Tables, Figures, and Supplementary Materials, Where Applicable
- Ethics, Consent, or Other Supporting Documents, Where Applicable
Where double-anonymous peer review applies, authors should remove identifying information from the review manuscript, including names, affiliations, identifying acknowledgments, and relevant document properties. Essential self-citations should remain accurate but should not unnecessarily reveal authorship. Identifying information must be provided separately to the editorial office.
Confidential documents containing personal or sensitive information should be handled in accordance with the applicable ethics and data protection requirements and should not be included in files intended for reviewer access unless appropriately prepared and authorized.
Step 5: Enter Manuscript Metadata /
Authors should enter complete and accurate manuscript metadata in the designated submission fields. These details support editorial processing, publication preparation, scholarly discovery, indexing, and citation. The information should correspond to the submitted manuscript and separate author documentation.
Metadata to Verify /
- Manuscript Title /
- Abstract and Keywords, Where Applicable /
- All Author Names and Their Order /
- Institutional Affiliations /
- Contact Details and Corresponding Author /
- ORCID iDs, Where Available / ORCID iD(如有)
- Funding and Relevant Declarations /
Category-Specific Abstracts: Research-oriented manuscripts normally provide abstracts, with a recommended English length of 150–250 words and a maximum of 300 words. Forum Contributions require an abstract of no more than 150 English words. For standard Book Reviews, an abstract is optional; if provided, it must not exceed 150 English words.
For manuscripts written in Chinese, authors are encouraged to supply an English title, abstract, and keywords to support international discoverability. For English-language manuscripts, corresponding Chinese metadata may be supplied where appropriate.
Where a submission field does not reflect the applicable article-specific requirement, authors should seek clarification from the editorial office rather than entering inaccurate or placeholder information. Author-identifying metadata should remain separate from the anonymized manuscript supplied for review.
Step 6: Confirm Declarations /
Before completing the submission, authors should confirm the declarations relevant to their manuscript. All statements must accurately represent the circumstances of the research and comply with the journal's publication ethics and research integrity requirements.
- Originality /
- No Simultaneous Submission /
- Authorship and Author Contributions /
- Conflicts of Interest /
- Funding /
- Ethics Approval or Exemption, Where Applicable /
- Informed Consent, Where Applicable /
- Data and Materials Availability, Where Applicable /
- Substantive AI Use Disclosure, Where Applicable /
Where a declaration is genuinely inapplicable, authors may state "Not applicable" as appropriate. Ethical approval, consent, funding, data availability, or authorship information must not be fabricated. Relevant confidential documentation should be supplied through an appropriate non-review file or communication channel where necessary.
Step 7: Review and Submit /
Before finalizing the submission, authors should review the uploaded files, manuscript category, section selection, author information, abstract, keywords, supplementary materials, and declarations. Particular attention should be paid to consistency between the manuscript files and the submission metadata.
Upon successful completion of the submission process, authors should check the submission status and any confirmation information provided by the system. They should retain relevant submission records and monitor subsequent editorial communications.
Incomplete submissions or files requiring correction may be returned before editorial assessment. Authors should provide missing materials or corrected information through the designated submission process when requested.
Step 8: Editorial Screening /
All submitted manuscripts undergo initial editorial screening. The editorial office assesses their relevance to the journal's aims and scope, scholarly originality, conceptual and methodological quality, presentation, completeness, and compliance with publication ethics and submission requirements.
Manuscripts that fall outside the journal's scope, lack sufficient originality or scholarly quality, contain significant ethical concerns, or do not meet essential submission requirements may be declined without external peer review. Administrative requests to correct incomplete files should be distinguished from substantive editorial rejection.
Manuscripts that pass initial screening proceed to the assessment process appropriate to their article category. Passing this stage does not imply acceptance for publication.
Step 9: Peer Review and Scholarly Assessment /
Manuscripts requiring external peer review are assigned to appropriately qualified reviewers with expertise relevant to the submission's subject, methods, language, and scholarly context. The review process examines originality, academic contribution, conceptual clarity, argumentative coherence, methodological appropriateness, evidence, and engagement with existing scholarship.
Review Procedures by Article Category /
Research-Oriented Categories: Original Research Articles, Theoretical Essays, Review Articles, Policy and Institutional Analysis articles, and research-oriented Special Issue Articles normally undergo double-anonymous external peer review.
Review Essays: These normally receive scholarly review appropriate to their scope, depth, and contribution.
Forum Contributions and Book Reviews: These may undergo editorial review, external peer review, or a combination of both, depending on their nature and scholarly content.
Reviewers are expected to provide independent, constructive, confidential, and professionally reasoned evaluations. The applicable review procedure and subsequent editorial decisions are governed by the journal's published Peer Review Policy.
Step 10: Editorial Decision /
After the applicable editorial or peer-review assessment, the responsible editor or editorial office determines the next action. Depending on the stage of assessment and the manuscript's condition, the decision or recommendation may include the following outcomes:
- Minor Revision
- Major Revision
- Revise and Resubmit
- Reject
Reviewer recommendations are advisory and do not themselves constitute an editorial decision. A request for revision is not an acceptance guarantee. The final decision is made by the responsible editor or editorial office under the journal's applicable procedures.
Step 11: Revision /
Where revision is requested, authors should submit a revised manuscript and a response letter addressing the relevant editorial and reviewer comments. Responses should explain the changes made and identify their locations in the revised text. Where an author respectfully disagrees with a recommendation, the response should provide an academic justification.
Revised manuscripts may be assessed by the editorial office, returned to previous reviewers, or referred to additional reviewers depending on the nature of the revisions. Authors should preserve anonymity in revised review files where double-anonymous assessment continues.
A revision request may be followed by further revision, additional review, acceptance, or rejection. Authors should use the submission system or other channel specifically designated by the editorial office for the relevant revision.
Step 12: Acceptance, Publication Charges, Production, and Proofing /
Once a manuscript has been formally accepted, the editorial office proceeds with the applicable publication arrangements. These may include confirming the article category, completing required publication declarations, verifying author and licensing information, processing any applicable APC, and preparing the article for final production.
Article Processing Charges /
Submission, editorial screening, and peer review are free of charge. Where an APC applies, it becomes payable only after formal acceptance and upon receipt of the editorial office's official payment instructions or invoice.
CNY 1,320 / USD 165
The standard APC includes the journal's stated 10% payment processing surcharge. Accepted manuscripts formally classified as Book Reviews are exempt from the standard APC. Other manuscript categories remain subject to the applicable policy unless an exception has been approved.
Accepted manuscripts subject to APC payment normally proceed to final production after the required payment has been completed and confirmed. Payment does not influence the preceding peer-review results or editorial acceptance decision.
Production and Author Proofing /
During production, the manuscript may undergo copyediting, citation and reference checks, formatting, figure and table preparation, and publication metadata verification. Editorial changes should preserve the scholarly meaning of the accepted work.
Authors may be asked to review proofs before publication. Proof corrections should normally address typographical errors, layout problems, metadata inaccuracies, and minor factual corrections. Substantial changes to the research argument, analysis, or results should be referred to the editorial office rather than introduced through routine proof correction.
Authors should refer to the journal's APC & Waiver Policy and Copyright & Licensing Policy for the applicable financial and publication conditions.
Step 13: Publication /
Once the required publication procedures and final production checks have been completed, the article may proceed to online publication. Published articles are made freely accessible immediately upon publication in accordance with the journal's open-access policy.
Unless otherwise stated, CRoPT articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), with authors retaining copyright. Reuse of separately licensed third-party material remains subject to the applicable rights and permissions.
Authors are encouraged to share the published version of record through institutional repositories, personal academic websites, and appropriate scholarly networks, providing the journal citation, DOI where available, original article link, and relevant licensing information.
Publication metadata, identifiers, and archiving arrangements depend on the applicable production and preservation processes. Authors should verify the final published record rather than assuming that any particular external index, repository, or identifier has been assigned before confirmation.
Technical Issues /
Authors encountering technical difficulties during registration, file upload, metadata entry, revision submission, or other stages of the online submission process should contact the editorial office. The enquiry should describe the problem, identify the relevant stage of submission, and include the submission reference number where available.
Screenshots of error messages may be supplied where helpful, provided that passwords, access tokens, sensitive personal information, and confidential research materials are removed or concealed. The editorial office may provide alternative instructions where technical problems prevent completion of the normal submission process.
